Rise Up and Read hosted a pop up library to support literacy and attachment for Haitian migrants in tent cities in Mexico City. Hundreds of families are camped in the Juarez district in CDMX on their migration journey from Haiti. They have little in the way of services or support.
Rise Up and Read, in partnership with Public Policy students at CIDE (Centro de Investigacion y Docencia Economicas) in Mexico City conducted a field assessment in Feb 2024 to better understand the numbers and ages of children in the camp, languages spokenandreadandwhatthecommunityinterest. Atthepopuplibrarywedistributed books in Creole, Spanish and English in addition to sharing the reading prescription. We also shared links to the virtual library.
It was heartening to see the children were curious and engaged with the library. We learned that the many of the parents and caregivers were interested in books in French as well and Creole, Spanish and English. There was also interest in Spanish: English dictionaries.
