About Us
Susanna Block is a pediatric hospitalist practicing in Seattle. She is a strong advocate for refugee health. She has worked internationally as well as within the US.
Dr Lesley Sylvan is a speech-language pathologist (SLP) and faculty member at Montclair State University. She embeds service learning as part of her teaching and research.
Dr Robyn Becker is a school based speech and language pathologist (SLP) with over 26 years of experience working with children with communication disorders. She is an adjunct professor ar Montclair University
Our Story
"Rise up and Read" started as a conversation between two friends. While working with Global Response Management in a Matamoros clinic, pediatrician Dr Susanna Block was struck by the fact that families faced with extreme stress from safety, food and shelter insecurity were also very concerned about their childrens education and language development. Dr Block called her friend, Dr Lesley Sylvan, a Speech and Language Pathologist, to ask about bilingual resources. Out of that call, and many following conversations "Rise up and Read" was created.
