A familiar story can bring comfort—even far from home.

Map of migrant centers carrying the Rise Up & Read virtual library

For children traveling along migration routes, ordinary childhood routines can be difficult to maintain. School may be interrupted, familiar surroundings are left behind, and days are often filled with uncertainty. Yet something as simple as story time can offer a moment to pause, learn, and reconnect.

Rise Up & Read / Leer Para Crecer has partnered with Télécoms Sans Frontières (TSF) to bring our virtual library to migrant centers from Colombia to Mexico. The library features children’s books read aloud in Spanish and French. Families can access the stories by phone, and TSF also shares them on screens in participating centers.

These screens provide people on the move with practical information about health and legal resources, weather conditions, and safety. By including the Rise Up & Read library, they also create space for children’s learning and emotional well-being.

For families navigating difficult and unfamiliar circumstances, access to trustworthy information can support safer, more informed decisions. For children, access to stories can provide something equally important: a familiar routine, a chance to learn and imagine, and a brief refuge from the stress around them.

We are grateful to TSF and everyone helping us bring books, reliable resources, and moments of stability to children and families on the move.

“A book is a small, portable kind of safety.”
